The novel is vague about the origins of the Judge to the point where there is nothing known about them. He is inspired by the allegedly real-life purported scalp hunter of the same name. Judge Holden is the main antagonist of the late Cormac McCarthy's 1985 anti-Western epic novel Blood Meridian. He dances in light and in shadow and he is a great favorite.
